I was reflecting on the theme of musical labour over the course of history. In the early 1900s when "Sweet Lorraine" was written, it was feasible for an artist to play an instrument as a full time job. But as class struggle progressed, it became impossible for artists to do this anymore, and nowadays most musicians make music on the computer in their bedroom as a hobby, a side thing while working a "real" job. I tried to reflect this change in the progression of the track from a happy, fairly relaxed tone, gradually overcome by the office sounds of shuffling paper, typing and the microsoft teams call sound. In the second half the flute sounds are resampled with a strict rhythm, in a sense the song is locked into a routine similar to a work routine.
